How to get Litecoin

LTC is Litecoin’s ticker and short name. You can buy it on centralized exchanges, swap into it through exchangers or DEX routes, bridge a wrapped version on other chains, or mine it. A self-custody Litecoin wallet is useful first - see Wallets.

Centralized exchanges (CEX)

Centralized exchanges are the most common path for newcomers. You trade through a company that matches orders, often with fiat on-ramps. Liquidity is usually deep, and Litecoin is listed on most major platforms. The trade-off is custody and account requirements while funds sit on the exchange.

Instant exchangers

Instant exchangers swap one crypto for another at a quoted rate, usually without a full trading account. They are convenient for moving from BTC, ETH, USDT, and other assets into native LTC. Rates include a spread, and larger amounts may face extra checks depending on the service.

DEX and native cross-chain swaps

Litecoin’s base layer is a UTXO payments chain, so it does not host Uniswap-style AMMs for native LTC. For decentralized swaps into real Litecoin on the Litecoin network, the main option is cross-chain liquidity protocols that support Litecoin as a Layer-1 asset.

THORChain is the best-known route for swapping native Litecoin against assets like BTC or ETH without wrapping. Interfaces such as THORSwap sit on top of that liquidity. Expect wallet complexity and variable fees or slippage compared with a large CEX book.

Market trackers such as CoinMarketCap also list EVM DEXes for Litecoin because wrapped LTC (for example ERC-20 or BEP-20) trades there. Uniswap (Ethereum), SushiSwap (multi-chain), and PancakeSwap (BNB Chain) are the best-known venues for that form of LTC - useful inside DeFi, but not the same as holding native Litecoin.

Bridges and wrapped Litecoin

Wrapped Litecoin (wLTC / similar tickers) is a token on another chain - often Ethereum as an ERC-20 - backed 1:1 by LTC held by a custodian or bridge. That token can trade on DeFi venues such as Uniswap, SushiSwap, or PancakeSwap on the destination chain.

This is useful when you need Litecoin exposure inside Ethereum or BSC DeFi. It is not the same as holding native LTC on the Litecoin network: you add bridge and smart-contract risk, and liquidity is usually thinner than on major CEX markets. Prefer native LTC unless you specifically need the wrapped form.

Mining

Litecoin is mined with the Scrypt algorithm. In practice that means dedicated ASIC hardware - CPU and GPU mining are no longer competitive. Many pools also merge-mine Dogecoin alongside LTC, so the same hashrate can earn both.

Mining secures the network and can produce LTC over time, but it depends on hardware cost, electricity price, difficulty, and the block reward schedule (next halving expected around 2027). For most people who simply want to hold or spend Litecoin, buying or swapping remains the more direct path.

How to choose

  • Fiat to LTC - centralized exchange
  • Crypto to LTC, quick - instant exchanger
  • Native LTC without a CEX account - THORChain-style DEX
  • DeFi on Ethereum / BNB Chain - wrapped LTC on Uniswap, SushiSwap, or PancakeSwap
  • Earn by securing the chain - Scrypt ASIC mining
