Litecoin Core
Litecoin Core is the reference wallet for the Litecoin network - the same software lineage that miners, exchanges, and explorers rely on. It is a full node: it downloads and verifies the blockchain, so you do not need to trust a third-party server for balances and transaction history.
Official builds are published for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Start from the project site or the download portal rather than random mirrors.

What a full node gives you
A full node checks every block and transaction against consensus rules. That means your wallet can confirm payments without asking someone else’s API whether a deposit is “real.” It also helps the network by relaying blocks and transactions to peers.
The trade-off is disk space, bandwidth, and first-time sync. The Litecoin chain is smaller than Bitcoin’s, but the initial download still takes time and gigabytes of storage. Once synced, day-to-day use is straightforward: send, receive, and optionally enable advanced features as they ship in Core releases.
MWEB and privacy
Modern Litecoin Core builds support MWEB (MimbleWimble Extension Blocks) - an optional privacy path for amounts and address linkage on Litecoin. Support and UX vary by version, so check the release notes for the build you install if private sends matter to you.
When Core is the right choice
- Maximum sovereignty - you verify the chain yourself
- Long-term desktop custody - a machine you control and keep backed up
- Development and learning - same stack the network runs on
- Pairing with hardware - some setups use Core as a verifier while a device signs (see Hardware wallets)
If you want something lighter for daily spends, a mobile or Electrum-style wallet is often easier - see Software wallets. Keep large balances on Core or hardware, and treat seed backups like cash in a safe.
Backup basics
Core wallets are secured by a wallet file and, in typical setups, a recovery seed or backup you create during setup. Write that backup offline, store it somewhere only you can reach, and never paste it into a website or chat. Losing the backup without another copy means losing access to the coins.
